JOSEPH HILL

Husband of Ruth Hill

who died 

Oct 5th 1839

in the 68th year

of his age.

According to his headstone, Joseph Hill would have been born about 1771. He was my 5th great-grandfather. He was married to Ruth Fowler, daughter of Richard and Ruth Fowler. Ruth is also buried in this cemetery. 

• His son Elijah Hill [2] married Rachel Watson, daughter of Nancy Jeans and John Watson. 
• Their son Joseph Watson Hill married Josephine F Cox [3], daughter of Robert Cox and Basheba McCoy [4].
• Their son Nathaniel "Gus" Hill [5] married Jessie Inez Barton, daughter of James Silas Barton and Sarah Alice Tinsley. 
• Their daughter Blanche Kathryne Hill was my great-grandmother. She married John Brooks Binns, son of John Milton Binns and Perthinia Eula Brooks. I was fortunate to have grown up with most of my great-grandparents. 
• Their daughter Barbara Binns is my grandmother. She has taken the Family Finder autosomal DNA test.

   [5] I have not found the will of Gus' father, John Watson Hill. I do intend to order the death certificate of Gus Hill, though, which should have the name of his parents listed. 

Tombstone Tuesday - Barney Benson & Eva Dennis

Barney Benson and Eva Mae Dennis

They were my 2nd great-grandparents on my Mother's side. Eva Mae Dennis was born December 24th, 1889 in Paris, Texas to Reuben Dennis and Lucenda Gentry. Barney Benson was born February 19th, 1884 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to T. J. Benson and Lulu Bulllington. They met in Garrett's Bluff, Texas and married at the home of Barney's sister May Benson and brother-in-law Bert Wheeler in Boynton, Oklahoma in 1911. 

Eva and Barney lived mostly in Oklahoma where they raised 8 children, including my great-grandmother, Louise Benson. Barney worked in the oil fields and Eva stayed at home and raised the children. Unfortunately, their time together was cut short when Barney died suddenly from a heart attack while visiting with family in California in 1952. His remains were returned to Oklahoma and his wife Eva was buried beside him when she died 30 years later in 1983.

Mildred Alice Peters was the daughter of William Herbert Peters and Emily Dodd. She is buried in Joliff Cemetery in Rover, Oregon Co., Missouri. I photographed this stone in May 2006. Her cousins Alvy and Charley King are also buried here.

The inscription reads: 

Charley Son of W. F. & Mary King, Born Dec. 7, 1895, Died Nov. 27 1898

Sleep on sweet babe and take thy rest God called thee home. 

Charley King was the son of William Fletcher King and Mary French. William Fletcher King was the brother of my 2nd great-grandmother, Dora King who died around 1912 of a snake bite. Charley and his brother Alvy King died at a very young age and are buried next to one another at Joliff Cemetery in Rover, Oregon Co., MO. Other tombstones I have photographed in this cemetery include French, House, Huddleston, Joliff, Judd, Kimbrough, King, Nichols, Peters, Richards, and Willard.

This cemetery is approximately 1 mile north of Koshkonong on Highway 63. From Highway 63, take M Highway and go approx. 10 miles on M Highway to 160 Highway. Go approximately 3/4 mile east on highway 160 to first dirt road south. Keep bearing east for approximately 1 1/2 miles. Look for a sign post for the cemetery.

Tombstone Tuesday - David Orr Godwin

David Orr Godwin, b. 10 May 1854, d. 24 Oct 1928 - Personal collection of Ginger R. Smith, photograph taken May 1, 2006 by Ginger R. Smith, Saddle Cemetery, Saddle, Fulton County, Arkansas

David Orr Godwin was the son of Agrippa Sprinks Godwin and Eliza Ann Orr. He was born 10 May 1854 and died 24 October 1828, one year before his mother Eliza Godwin died. Eliza lived in Ash Flat, Arkansas and was buried at the Old Baptist Church Cemetery in Ash Flat, Arkansas. Her headstone was pictured here.

David Godwin and his wife, Zilphia Ann Pulley (headstone pictured below), raised their 15 children in Saddle Arkansas, then they sold their farm and moved to a smaller farm in the town of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas where they ran a boarding house in the 1920s.

Tombstone Tuesday - Louise and James P Lasiter

Last week, for my Wordless Wednesday post, I posted two pictures of my great-grandparents who are buried here in this plot. They were buried in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They weren't buried with the rest of the Putman and Lasiter family, however. That family plot might have been filled up by the time James Putman Lasiter had purchased this plot for him and his wife. Afterall, there were at least 8 people buried there by the time James Lasiter died in 1974! I never got to meet him because he died before I was born. He died of heart failure. He worked for the news paper and my great grandmother worked for a couple of department stores. She was one of the few women who finished high school during that time. We were not a family that visited our loved ones' graves, so this was the first time I had ever been to this cemetery and visited the grave of my great-grandfather (and his parents and grand-parents) - when I took this picture - 06 May 2006.

T. J. Benson and Lulu Bullington were my 3rd great-grandparents. They were married July 5, 1878 in Washington County, Mississippi. (You can view their marriage license here.) They lived in Mountain, Arkansas for a bit and then finally settled on a family farm in Lamar County, Texas by 1900.

Thomas Adolphus Putman was my 3rd Great-Grandfather. He was born April 26, 1845 in Hall County, Georgia to Berry Barton Putman and Martha Francis Tate. He married my 3rd Great-Grandmother, Martha Ann Ward on January 20, 1969 in Arkansas. He died November 21, 1918 in Bloomer, Arkansas and was buried in the family plot in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Tombstone Tuesday - Martha Ward - Putman

Tombstone Inscription reads "Martha Ward-Putman, July 24, 1850 - Jan 11, 1924" - Photograph in the personal collection of Ginger R. Smith, taken May 6, 2006 by Ginger R. Smith, Forest Park Cemetery, Fort Smith, Arkansas. 

Martha Ann Ward was my 3rd great-grandmother.  She was the daughter of Castleton and Mary Ward, both natives of Tennessee. Martha Ward married my 3rd great-grandfather, Thomas Adolphus Putman, January 20th, 1869 in Sebastian County, Arkansas. They had 4 children, Nona, Rosalie, Annie, and Pearl Putman. Thomas Putman preceded Martha in death. Martha was 69 years old when she died of a heart attack from complications from bronchitis. She was buried in the family plot beside her husband in Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Tombstone Tuesday - Alvy King

This tombstone inscription reads the following: "Alvy King Son of W.F. & Mary King, 19 Nov 1905 - 11 Jun 1907" - Photo of tombstone taken by Ginger R. Smith, May 1, 2006, and is copyright 2010 by Ginger R. Smith.

 
W. F. King was William Fletcher King, the brother of Dora King who was the mother of my great-grandmother Nova Peters. Poor Alvy was only 2 years old. William F. King married Mary French and they had 12 children. Their first son, Charley King, also died young. He was born 1895 and died 1898. He is buried next to his brother Alvy.

Their tombstones are located in Joliff Cemetery near Rover, Oregon Co., MO. Other tombstones I have photographed in this cemetery include French, House, Huddleston, Joliff, Judd, Kimbrough, King, Nichols, Peters, Richards, and Willard.

Tombstone Tuesday - Vibert Peters

Stone marker for burial of Vibert Peters. - From the personal collection of Ginger R. Smith, photo taken at Riverside Cemetery, Mammoth Springs, Arkansas, May 1, 2006

Vibert Peters was the brother of my great-grandmother Nova Peters Godwin, son of William E. Peters and Dora King. Vibert Peters died November 4, 1936 in Fulton County, Arkansas from Tuberculosis.

This marker was one of two placed by Patsy Pendergrass Cook's family of Mammoth Springs, AR. the other one, simply etched with "Godwin" was placed upon the burial site of Nova's 5th child born, a baby girl named "Mary Godwin" who died in infancy.

Riverside Cemetery is located in Mammoth Springs, Fulton Co., AR. Photos taken by Ginger Smith, May 1, 2006.

- My great-grandmother, daughter of William Edward Peters and Dora King.  Born August 11, 1908, died August 22, 2000 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She married Orville Godwin in West Plains, Missouri November 9, 1927. She is buried in Hackett, Arkansas in a relatively small cemetery called Mount View Cemetery overlooking Hackett Lake.

Tombstone Tuesday - Eliza Ann Orr Godwin

Eliza Ann Orr married Agrippa Spinks Godwin who died 1864 at the Battle of Iron Knob in Iron Knob MO. The burial spot of Agrippa Spinks Godwin is unknown at this time but is believed to be an unmarked mass burial grave in Ironton.

This was the state of the tombstone as I found it in 2006 - in 3 separate pieces.
